On May 15, the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) raised concerns over the delayed launch of Direct-to-Home (DTH) television services in Pakistan, citing significant financial losses to the country. It is estimated that billions of rupees are being sent to India annually due to the absence of a local DTH service.
In a letter to the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) chairman, the SIFC Secretariat questioned why the licensed company, Shehbaz International, has not yet launched the service despite being awarded a license in 2016. Sources reveal that the company has not only failed to pay crores of rupees in license fees to PEMRA but has also applied for a waiver of over Rs900 million in fines. Additionally, the company has sought permission to procure tax-free equipment for DTH services.
PEMRA has reportedly issued a final notice to Shehbaz International for its failure to launch the service according to the schedule. The company’s CEO has declined to comment on the matter.
The SIFC has called for a meeting with all stakeholders next week to discuss the delay and potential solutions. The council emphasized the need for a domestic DTH service to prevent further financial losses and promote the growth of the local media industry.
