KARACHI: Guitar maestro Aamir Zaki created entrancing music with popular underground rock band Spoonful at the Base Rock Café on Saturday in an event sponsored by Yellow.

Formed in December 2006, Spoonful comprises Hamad Khan at lead guitar and vocals; Jasir Abro and Ali Haider Habib on bass and guitars; Nadir Siddiqui on vocals and harmonica; and Abdul Aziz Kazi on drums and percussion.

Spoonful played classic rock gems like Steppenwolf’s “Born to be Wild” and The Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”.

Belting out high-energy vocals and thrashing guitar solos, the band brought down the house before welcoming Zaki to play with them.

The exceptionally loud instruments drowned out the vocals at times and there were also times when the band was unable to keep up with Zaki who was exceptionally swift with his guitar, but no one seemed to demur.

Records, guitars and t-shirts adorned the crimson coloured walls of the café whose motto is “We serve
music not food”.

The café opened its doors last April and since then, more then 89 bands have preformed at the venue.

Faisal Malik of the café said they hold events catering to all musical tastes, including rock, pop and even jazz.

Heavy metal is not played here as it is loud and the audience gets so caught up in the music that they start headbanging and moshing, he added.

He also said the café owned a karaoke machine with more then 20,000 songs, claiming that no one else had that many in the city.

The café plans to have a weekly jam session with Zaki, where the café approved “Diplomats of Rock” would play with the maestro.
