MITHI: Applicants for the Computerised National Identity Cards including women have to stand for hours in long queues in front of Nadra office, with no shed or tree to get protection from mercilessly hot summer sun.

They complained that they had been visiting the Nadra office for last three days but they had not even been issued tokens yet.

They said that majority of applicants had to walk long distances on foot to the office, which was situated three kilometres from Mithi bus terminal. They had to face great inconvenience travelling with women and children, they complained.

An official at the Nadra office told on condition of anonymity that they faced shortage of staff to handle women applicants for Benazir Bhutto Income Support Programme.

About 380 tokens had been issued over last two days but the number of women showed no sign of diminishing, he said.

He said that police had been deployed at the office gates because of a rise in skirmishes between people waiting in queues for their turn to get tokens. The villagers urged the Nadra high-ups to streamline functioning of the Mithi office and provide adequate facilities to people.
