On July 29, TikTok launched a new search feature to help users in Pakistan access verified and official information during the ongoing monsoon flood season. According to a press release issued by the platform’s public relations firm, the feature aims to ensure timely access to accurate updates and support resources amid the heightened risk of flooding and extreme weather events across various parts of the country.
“Now, users searching for flood-related updates on TikTok will now see a prominent banner urging them to verify information through credible sources,” the statement read.
The search guide connects users directly with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), allowing them to receive reliable updates about natural disasters. It also links to TikTok’s Safety Centre and the Tragic Event Support guide, which offers practical information for those affected by distressing incidents.
The Tragic Event Support guide outlines what constitutes a tragic event — including natural disasters and personal loss — and provides users with resources for mental health support and guidance on responsibly reporting or sharing related content.
“We understand that during times of crisis, access to timely and accurate information is critical,” said Fahad Muhammad Khan Niazi, TikTok’s Head of Public Policy and Government Relations in Pakistan. “By partnering with organisations that work directly with disaster response and making these resources more visible to our community, we aim to support informed decision-making and ensure user safety.”
The initiative comes as the monsoon season continues across Pakistan, typically lasting from late June to September, bringing increased risks of flash floods and landslides, particularly in northern and western regions.
Earlier this month, Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal highlighted the need to address growing threats of misinformation and disinformation. Last year, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar stated that the government was working on creating a separate authority to safeguard digital rights and counter online propaganda.
The new guide is part of TikTok’s broader efforts to promote digital safety and support responsible engagement on its platform.
