FAISALABAD: A three-member team constituted by Punjab police inspector general to probe into the torture of a woman in a police station will visit Faisalabad on Tuesday (today) and record the statements of the accused police personnel and the victim.

The team formed by IG Tariq Saleem Dogar, comprising additional IG Aftab Sultan (head), DIG (Establishment) Dr Shoaib Dastgir and DIG Major Mubashir (retired), Principal, Police Training School Chung, will record the statements at the Police Lines. Sources said the Faisalabad police high-ups, after updating the record, summoned all personnel of Civil Lines police station and the women police station to appear before the probe team. The victim, Ms Abdia Hameed, was also asked to appear before the committee, along with persons attached with her case.

City Police Officer Rao Mohammad Sardar had also suspended women police station sub-inspector Gul Naz, SI Raja Toheed and two lady constables from service.

Women police station SHO Zahida Tariq and the then Civil Lines SHO Nasrullah Niazi had already been suspended from service by the CPO.

The Civil Lines police had tortured Ms Abida Hameed in Aug 2008, accusing her of “thrashing policemen and snatching official record during a case (investigation)”.

Ms Hameed of People’s Colony was brought to the police station in connection with a case registered against her on Aug 26, 2008, under sections 186, 337-A1, 353 and 506.

The sources said a case was being instituted against the accused policemen on the complaint of the victim.

WHEAT: The district administration will submit recommendations to the Punjab food department for enhancement of wheat procurement target for Faisalabad.

At a press conference here on Monday, DCO Saeed Wahlah said that during this season the agriculture department had estimated wheat yield at 8.8 million bags in the district out of which the local food department was purchasing 1490,000 bags which was only 16 per cent of the total yield.

He said in some other districts the food department was purchasing up to 40 per cent of the total yield. Keeping these figures in view the district administration had decided to ask the food authorities for the target enhancement, he said.

The DCO said 11 wheat purchase centres had been set up in the district and the concerned DDORs had been appointed focal persons to monitor the procurement process. He said that he himself was paying surprise visits to the centres.
