Speakers at a reference event held in Karachi commemorated the 18th death anniversary of veteran journalist, writer, poet, and researcher Anwar Pirzado, describing him as a fearless critic, political activist, and passionate advocate for Sindh and its ancient civilisation.

The event was jointly organised by the Progressive Writers Association Karachi and the Karachi Press Club and took place at the Press Club’s auditorium. The gathering was attended by prominent intellectuals, journalists, and writers who paid tribute to Pirzado’s extensive work in journalism, poetry, and social activism.

Speakers including Iqbal Tareen, Nazir Mehmood, Professor Tauseef Ahmed Khan, Professor Riaz Shaikh, Sohail Sangi, Riaz Shahid Dayo, Zarar Pirzado, Ammar Pirzado, and writer Mohammad Ali Pathan highlighted Pirzado’s lasting legacy. They noted his deep commitment to Sindh, the Indus River, and the ancient site of Mohenjo-daro, which were central themes in his work.

Professor Tauseef Ahmed Khan described Pirzado as a multifaceted figure who contributed to both English and Sindhi media, using his platform to speak against oppressive regimes and to advocate for the rights and uplift of Sindh’s people. Iqbal Tareen referred to him as a “true son of the soil,” whose journalism and poetry consistently reflected his connection with the region and its culture.

Professor Nazir Mehmood recalled his long association with Pirzado, rooted in shared political ideals, and expressed appreciation for Pirzado’s intellectual influence. Writer Mohammad Ali Pathan added that Sindh, its river, and its ancient civilisation were not only recurring themes but guiding forces in Pirzado’s life and work.

Zarar Pirzado and Ammar Pirzado, sons of the late journalist, also addressed the gathering. They shared personal memories of their father and informed participants that the Anwar Pirzado Melo is organised annually in their native village Bhalreji to honour his memory. They also mentioned that his unpublished writings have been released posthumously to continue his intellectual contribution.
