Two More Suspects Freed on Bail in Journalist Mahar Murder Case

Pakistan Press Foundation

On October 17, the Anti-Terrorism Court of Sukkur granted bail to two additional suspects involved in the murder of journalist Jan Muhammad Mahar. The suspects, Shero Shaikh and Ramzan Shaikh, were released on bail of Rs200,000 each during a hearing presided over by Judge Abdul Rehman Qazi. The case has been adjourned until October 29 for further proceedings.

Complainant Karamullah Mahar expressed frustration over the delay in apprehending the main suspects. He stated that police officials claim the suspects are hiding in a difficult-to-access riverine area known to be controlled by criminal gangs. He further noted that six other individuals, including Bakhshal, Babar, Munawwar, and Basheer, had already secured bail earlier, and now Shero Shaikh and Ramzan Shaikh had joined them.

Mahar, a seasoned journalist associated with the KTN TV channel, was fatally shot on August 13, 2023, in the Sukkur city while on his way home from the office. The assailants, riding a motorcycle, targeted him near St. Saviour School on Queens Road, shooting him with multiple bullets in the head and near his eyes. The victim was rushed to a private hospital and underwent surgery, but he succumbed to his injuries.

In the ongoing investigation into journalist Mahar’s murder, his family has accused Shero Mahar, Gulzar Mahar, Roshan Mahar, and others, but none have been apprehended so far. The police have instead arrested several other suspects for questioning, most of whom have since secured bail.
