On September 22, Uks, a research centre focused on gender and media in Pakistan, launched an AI-powered platform, ‘Seen, Heard, Respected: AI for Inclusive Communication’, to help media professionals and content creators promote more gender inclusive communication.
Developed through nearly three decades of research, the ‘Feminist AI’ platform includes tools to identify biased, hurtful or abusive language and suggest more inclusive alternatives. It supports English, Urdu and Roman Urdu, while users retain control over edits and their data remains private.
Uks Executive Director Tasneem Ahmar said the platform aims to improve the representation of women and marginalised groups in media. The tool is not only a practical asset for newsrooms but could also be used in academic settings to train future journalists and content creators.
The platform includes ‘Spot Check’ to flag biased or abusive words, ‘Deep Read’ to assess representation, ‘Write it Better’ for inclusive phrasing, ‘Language Bridge’ for translation, ‘Ask Uks’ as a chat assistant and ‘My Files’ for storing analysis results.
The initiative was supported by the World Association for Christian Communication (WACC), which also assisted in integrating Urdu language support in the project’s second phase, expected to be completed by April 2027.
