
On August 28, senior journalist and former Secretary General of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE), Amir Mehmood, was laid to rest in Karachi after funeral prayers.
Mehmood, son of Mahmood Riaz and nephew of the celebrated literary figure Ibn-e-Insha, was also the Chief Editor of the monthly Kiran, Khawateen, Shuaa, and Imran Digest Group.
The funeral was attended by Adviser to the Sindh Chief Minister Waqar Mehdi, All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) President Sarmad Ali, CPNE Secretary General Ghulam Nabi Chandio, Finance Secretary Hamid Hussain Abidi, Vice President (Sindh) Qazi Asad Abid, former Secretary General Ejazul Haq, and a large number of colleagues and friends.
President Asif Ali Zardari, offering condolences on August 27, described Mehmood as a respected and distinguished name in journalism and publishing. He said Mehmood had rendered invaluable services in the fields of journalism and literature. The President prayed for his soul and for strength to be granted to his family.
Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, and Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab also paid tribute to the late journalist, acknowledging his dedication to media freedom and institutional welfare.
The CPNE, in a joint condolence statement issued by President Kazim Khan, Secretary General Ghulam Nabi Chandio, office-bearers, and Standing Committee members, said that Amir Mehmood’s decades-long struggle for the constitutional and democratic right to freedom of expression set a shining example for future generations.
