Week-long gala to mark 50 years of APMC

LAHORE: A week-long Golden Jubilee Celebrations (1960-2010) of All Pakistan Music Conference will commence on Feb 19 and will conclude on Feb 24.

The grand opening ceremony will be held at the Open Air Theatre, Bagh-i-Jinnah, APMC Secretary-General Dr Ghazala Irfan told Dawn.

She said a plaque is being installed to commemorate the first APMC held at the Open Air Theatre 50 years ago. Classical music lovers, music maestros, regular visitors to the APMC concerts and people from all walks of life would participate in this colourful ceremony.

A series of music concerts and award ceremonies which are part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations will be held at Alhamra Art Center, The Mall.

“We always hold APMC music concerts at the Open Air Theatre, Bagh-i-Jinnah, but keeping in view the security concerns the rest of the programmes are being held at Alhamra Art Center, The Mall,”said Ms Irfan.

On Feb 20, there will be classical music night. The same evening Fourth APMC Lifetime Achievement Award would be given to a classical music maestro whose name would be announced on the spot. Next day, a dialogue on 50 years of APMC will be held. On this occasion, Tamgha-i-Tehseen awards ceremony would also be held.

The celebrations also include performances by 2009 APMC’s gold medalists under the title, ‘Gharanoon Ki Miraas’, as part of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations. Young generation of classical maestros will perform on that evening.

Feb 23 and 24 evenings will be dedicated to folk, light classical and classical music in which various vocalists and instrumentalists will perform.

On March 7, APMC will tentatively hold a classical dance night at Ali Auditorium, Ferozpur Road, in which five students of noted classical dancer Naheed Siddiqui will perform.

The APMC was founded in 1959 when some concerned citizens met at the famous Coffee House of Lahore and launched a voluntary organisation. The main objective of the APMC was to promote music and musicians by organising concerts, conferences and festivals.
