On June 4, Saad Ahmed, a 24-year-old YouTuber, was fatally shot while capturing the local fervor for the T20 World Cup 2024. The incident occurred at the Serena Mobile Market in the Sakhi Hasan area in Karachi.

Ahmed was filming a video capturing the local enthusiasm for the cricket tournament. According to police reports, Ahmed was interviewing shopkeepers and businessmen when he approached a security guard, Gul Hassan, to discuss the ongoing video shoot. The conversation took a fatal turn as Hassan reportedly opened fire, striking Ahmed in the shoulder and causing him to collapse. Emergency responders rushed Ahmed to a nearby hospital,  where he was pronounced dead. The police have since detained the security guard and seized the weapon used in the shooting.

Police have detained Gul and are investigating the motives behind his actions, noting that as he was from Waziristan, he faced language barriers and could not “effectively communicate” in Urdu.

Mukhtiar Ahmed, the victim’s father, has filed a complaint against the guard, the security company, and the market management. He said his son had permission to film.

On June 6, the investigation officer (IO) presented the accused Gul to the judicial magistrate (Central), requesting a 14-day remand for further questioning. After considering the IO’s request, the court granted a three-day remand and ordered the IO to provide a progress report at the subsequent hearing.

The victim’s father, in his complaint, said his son was making a vlog about the upcoming Pakistan-India World Cup match and was shot when he tried to interview the guard.
