On May 3, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon marked World Press Freedom Day by disbursing substantial financial grants to several journalist associations. Holding multiple portfolios, the provincial information minister presented cheques of Rs5 million each to the leaders of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ), and Sukkur Union of Journalists (SUJ).

The cheques were received by notable figures within the journalism community, including Lala Asad Pathan for PFUJ, President Ijaz Ahmed and General Secretary Aajiz Jamali for KUJ, and Javed Jatoi for SUJ. An additional Rs. 2 crores was allocated to the Sindh Parliamentary Reporters Association (SPRA).

During the commemoration, a delegation from the Malir Press Club, led by President Hanif Soomro, engaged in discussions with the minister, which was also attended by Karachi Deputy Mayor Salman Murad, who participated in the day’s dialogue and celebrations.

Speaking at the event, Memon expressed his pride in the Sindh government’s initiatives aimed at bolstering journalism, aligned with the principles advocated by former chairperson of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Shaheed Benazir Bhutto and currently promoted by President Asif Ali Zardari and Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto. He emphasized the critical role journalists play as society’s reflectors, stating: “Journalists serve as the mirror of society.”  He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to resolving their challenges.

Highlighting the broader perspective, Memon pointed out the government’s unwavering support for press freedom.

In his message on World Press Freedom Day, Memon highlighted the establishment of the Protection of Journalists Commission as a significant achievement of the People’s Party.
