10th ICC photo exhibition inaugurated

ISLAMABAD (April 21 2008): The 10th annual photographic exhibition of the Islamabad Camera Club (ICC) was inaugurated at Lok Virsa Heritage on Sunday. The wife of the Ambassador of Czech Republic, Vierra Langerova opened the exhibition and presented the life achievement award to photographer, Muhammad Hanif Malik.

Malik’s though an automobile engineer has a passion for clicking quaint images of people’s faces. Langerova presented shields and certificates to photographers, Mujahaid Owais (first prize), Abdul Razzaq Vance, (second prize) and Pervaiz Akhtar Mirza (third prize).

Attya Eldrum, Syeda Nasreen Sultana, Ahmad Hussain, Junaid Bashir, Muhammad Azhar and Azhar Ali Chaudhry also received distinction prizes for their extra-ordinary camera work. 63 photographs out 150 registrants from across the country exhibited their photos in the exhibition. Langerova in her speech praised the participating photographers for their marvellous camera skill.

‘This art showcases our right to exist and to proclaim that ‘we have been here in this world”, she said. The President, ICC, Dr Shaukat Malik in his welcome address introduced the Czech Ambassador’s wife, who is a well-known photo- journalist in Prague. She has studied film and theatre arts, and also submitted a doctoral thesis discussing the film-industries of South Asia.

She has been an admirable help to her husband’s assignment and has identified herself with the Pakistani womenfolk, touring all over Pakistan and capturing beautiful landscape of this country. It was amazing to see her covering her head with stole, when the Holy Quran was recited at the beginning.

Malik’s black and white photographic display on a theme of Pakistani men and women were placed on three special panels in the exhibition. One untitled entry depicting a boy between two water pitchers composed against the background of a bamboo screen, which showed rays of light filtering between bamboo spaces.

The best entry, however, was that of a Leepa Girl, full of wrinkles at young age due her living under denial, yet eyes had sparkle of hope. Colour picture of Owais titled “Happiness” featuring a smiling Baloch elder with his boy while a camel drifted from his tent-home.

The second prize winning coloured entry by Abdul Razzaq Vance captured a potter designing clay with magic skill of shaping the pieces on his wheel. Mirza Pervez Akhtar portrayed the splendour of Bolan Pass. Among the woman photographers, Sultana Nasreen’s photo. Behta Suraj is a perfect composition Pakistan’s fascinating countryside.

The ICC Secretary General, Dr Khurshid informed the guests that the President, Pakistan Photographic Society, Javed Qazi and Vice-President, Shaikh Amin were the judges of the event, unanimously decided conferring the life time achievement award to Malik.
