PTV orders probe into map mistake in the program Nukta-e-Imtiaz

ISLAMABAD—Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV) on Tuesday ordered constituting an inquiry committee to probe the matter of an incorrect map shown during the program Nukta-e-Imtiaz last week.

An office order from the PTV’s controller administration and personnel said an incorrect map of Pakistan was televised, which was an act of negligence by relevant officials and caused irreparable loss to the corporation.

“The competent authority has, therefore, ordered to constitute an inquiry committee comprising Chief Technology Officer and Director Sports to probe into the matter.”

The office order names the following staff against whom the inquiry will be conducted: chief news and current affairs Quatrina Hossain, director programming Kanwal Masud, controller in-charge current affairs Abdul Rasheed, producer programs Mukesh Kumar, producer current affairs Taimur Younas, programming assistant Muhammad Sadeer, and Nida Sajjad of news and current affairs.

The committee would fix responsibility and apportion blame if any, suggest measures for non-occurrence of any such incident in the future, and ensure whether or not the above officials are guilty of the charge leveled against them.

PTV had shown Pakistan’s map without the territories of Azad Jammu Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan in the program.

Non-payment of salaries by media outlets: Senate body seeks response from Information Ministry

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting Tuesday sought response from the ministry regarding the non-payment of dues by media outlets.

The meeting was held here under its Chairman Senator Faisal Javed. It deliberated on further proposed amendments to the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) Ordinance 2002 to suspend the licences of non-paying channels. Information and Broadcasting Minister Shibli Faraz and Information Secretary Akbar Hussain Durrani were directed to ensure their attendance in the next meeting.

The Standing Committee endorsed the written charter of demands presented by the Parliamentary Reporters Association. In the case of Senator Faisal Javed’s bill on Pemra amendment, there was a hope that through legislation, the issue of non-payment of salaries by TV channels would be addressed. The committee asked for concrete plan of action to deal with the issue of salaries to the media persons by their respective media houses.

Faisal Javed said that the committee was continuously following up on the issue of non-payment of salaries and would take it to its logical conclusion.

PEMRA bans Power Full Energy Drink TV Commercial

The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has banned TV Power Full Energy Drink TV Commercial on the basis of vulgarity and indecent content.

Based on the notification issued by PEMRA to all its licensees, The Power Full Energy Drink TV Commercial content that went against Islamic values, social norms and ethics of Pakistan

PEMRA made the decision to ban the TVC in Pakistan after receiving many complaints by the public through the Pakistan Citizen Portal and PEMRA Complaints Call Center.

All PEMRA licensees have been requested to ensure that all content aired through their respective channels much conform to the Electronic Media Code of Conduct 2015.

Kidnapper of Canadian journalist killed in encounter

PESHAWAR: The Bannu Police during an encounter killed an alleged terrorist who had links with the kidnapping of Canadian female journalist Khadija Abdul Qahaar, an official said on Tuesday.

 Khadija Abdul Qahaar, who claimed she had converted to Islam, along with her translator and guide was on her way to Miramshah in the hope of interviewing the local Taliban militants in North Waziristan in a taxi when unidentified armed men kidnapped her on November 12, 2008.Two million US dollars ransom was demanded by the TTP North Waziristan later. They threatened to kill her if their demand not met. A video was released later in which Khadija Abdul Qahaar made a plea to the authorities to get her released.

Later, reports said she was found dead in captivity on November 4, 2010. “the main kidnapper of the Canadian citizen was Amin Shah, who was also involved in eight other cases of terrorism. Besides, the accused had a link with the IED attack on a police mobile in Bannu on Monday. He was killed in an encounter with the police and quoted Regional Police Officer Abdul Ghafoor Afridi told The News. He added that the accused was charged in the FIR of the kidnapping of the Canadian citizen a few years back.

A police car was targeted on Monday with a remote controlled improvised explosive device (IED) attack after which two alleged terrorists were killed in the encounter. The evidences obtained from the killed men also led to the killing of Amin Shah in an encounter on Tuesday.

Four suspects in journalist’s killing case sent to jail

SUKKUR: The First Additional Judge of Jacobabad Sessions Court, Zulfiqar Ali Shaikh, on Tuesday rejected the bail application of four suspects nominated in the May 28 murder of a journalist, Zulfiqar Ali Mandrani, and remanded them into jail custody.

Police constable Mumtaz Dayo, Imam Ali Shah, Ustad Akbar Dayo and Ghulam Ali Dayo — who were on interim bail granted to them by the Sindh High Court at Larkana — appeared before the judge for confirmation of their bail but the judge rejected their plea and remanded them in judicial custody.

As soon as the order was passed, the suspects were arrested and sent to jail.

Mandrani, a reporter of Sindhi daily Koshish was shot dead while he was visiting a widow belonging to the Dayo community in Dodapur town of Garhi Khero taluka in Jacobabad. The area police believed it was a case of honour killing.
