
All Pakistan Newspapers Employees Confederation (APNEC) has elected its new leadership for the 2025–27 term, with Shakil Yamin Kanga chosen as chairman and Asghar Khan as secretary general. The election was held at the Karachi Press Club and followed by an oath-taking ceremony administered by Sindh Labour Minister Saeed Ghani.
During the event, the newly elected chairman, secretary general and other office-bearers formally assumed their roles. The elected vice-chairmen are Nasir Chishti, Mansoor Malik and Dara Zafar, while the positions of assistant secretary general will be jointly held by Rana Muhammad Yousaf, Waheed Sheikh and Mirza Imran Baig. Muhammad Irfan Ali was elected treasurer. Saeed Mohiuddin Pasha, Adnan Shaukat, Tahir Awan and Syed Sabir Ali were elected as members of the National Executive Council.
Representatives of journalists’ unions and media workers’ organisations conducted the polling process. The oath-taking ceremony was attended by journalists, union leaders and media professionals.
Speaking at the ceremony, secretary general Asghar Khan thanked senior journalists and media workers for their support. He said the new body would work on issues related to job security, delayed payments, welfare benefits and workplace protections for media employees. Chairman Shakil Yamin Kanga and other speakers highlighted the need for coordination between unions and media organisations to uphold workers’ rights.
Senior journalists, including Mazhar Abbas, Habibuddin Junaidi, Liaquat Shahi and Imtiaz Khan Faran, addressed the gathering. They congratulated the newly elected body and underscored the importance of collective efforts for the protection of newsroom employees. They also noted that the media sector continues to undergo rapid changes, making the role of APNEC significant in representing and supporting newspaper employees.
