KARACHI: Advisor to Sindh Chief Minister Ms Sharmila Farooqui visited Anti Karo-Kari Cell Naushehro Feroz where she listened to the public complaints on telephone and issued directives to the relevant authorities for solution to them.
Cell Inchage Ahmed Mastoi apprised the advisor that the cell is aimed at informing people about the outdated and notorious tradition of Karo-kari and providing medical, legal and security aid to the affected people.
Later, talking to journalists, Sharmila said that owing to efforts by the government and NGOs’ cooperation, the tyrant tradition of Karo-Kari in Sindh has almost come to an end as the people have got sufficient awareness about it.
She said that the media and the government role in raising awareness among people about Karo-Kari could not be ruled out. The steps for provision of women rights, their representation in assemblies and passage of bills about their rights are the result of the vision and struggle of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, she said.
The advisor said:”We are still struggling for women rights in this modern era as the women are these days also being killed in the pretext of Karo-Kari and acids are thrown on them.”
She said this Anti Karo-Kari Cell despite having limited resources is fighting against honor killings, however, there is need that people and private organizations to come forward with positive approach and help the government to bring an end to the menace of notorious tradition of Karo-Kari in the society.
DCO and SSP Naushehro Feroz, and People’s Party Women Wing leader Shahnaz Ansari were also present.
