The Federal Commission for Protection of Journalists and Media Professionals (CPJMP) activated its complaint mechanism, allowing journalists and media professionals to submit complaints manually while its online Complaint Management Portal is being developed.

The decision was made at the commission’s third meeting on October 6 at the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, chaired by Chairman Kamal Uddin Tipu. The meeting reviewed progress on decisions from the previous session and measures to make the commission operational.

The commission agreed to work with relevant stakeholders on the safety, protection, training and welfare of journalists and media professionals under the Protection of Journalists and Media Professionals Act, 2021. The Ministry of Human Rights also pledged support in drafting the commission’s rules and developing performance assessment mechanisms.

The meeting discussed the statutory definitions of “journalist” and “media professional” as per the 2021 Act, as well as job security, delayed and unpaid salaries, welfare provisions, insurance coverage, safety mechanisms and training facilities for media workers.

It was also decided that the commission’s five committees would finalise recommendations before the next meeting. The committees are responsible for rules, complaints, training and welfare, planning, and annual reports.
