The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) and the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) held a seminar in Lahore on September 24 titled “National Dialogue on the Future of Pakistan’s Digital Media,” bringing together policymakers, media professionals, academics and students to discuss the sector’s evolving role.
The seminar focused on opportunities in digital media and the economy, technological innovation, responsible digital communication, regulatory frameworks, digital literacy and youth participation, as well as pathways for investment, entrepreneurship, employment and economic growth.
The event featured addresses by FPCCI Regional Chairman and Vice President Zaki Aijaz, PEMRA Director General Ayesha Manzoor Wattoo, senior journalists, vice chancellors of various universities, digital media and international relations experts, and university faculty members. A large number of students also attended the seminar.
Speaking at the event, Wattoo said digital media had evolved from an extension of electronic media into a distinct sector with significant economic and employment potential. She highlighted the widespread use of mobile phones and the growing ability of individuals to create and share content, adding that PEMRA’s responsibilities extend beyond content regulation to public-interest and national security considerations.
Aijaz stressed the need to educate and train young people in digital media skills and called for appropriate regulation of social media platforms and the development of indigenous platforms. FPCCI President Atif Ikram Sheikh also highlighted the role of digital media in communicating factual information during critical national events.
