On June 25, Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani underlined the pivotal role of the media in democratic progress, asserting that a transparent Parliament and a free press remain the “true essence of democracy.” He was speaking at a luncheon hosted in honour of the Parliamentary Reporters Association (PRA) at Parliament House.

Addressing a gathering of journalists, legislators, and Senate officials, Gilani called for closer collaboration between Parliament and the media to strengthen democratic institutions. “We live in the age of media, which has evolved rapidly by adopting modern tools and technologies,” he said, emphasizing that responsible journalism was critical in an era of digital misinformation.

He added, “Your pen acts as a bridge between the people and those in power. The media’s responsibility in promoting national cohesion and strengthening institutions by highlighting the truth is more significant than ever.”

Recounting his own journey and affinity with journalism, Gilani highlighted his academic background in the field and his political legacy spanning over four centuries. “I understand and value the importance of free and responsible journalism,” he noted, citing his previous roles as Prime Minister, Speaker of the National Assembly, and now Chairman Senate, in which he consistently advocated for media rights.

He also reaffirmed his commitment to democratic values, stating, “We will follow Pakistan’s Constitution. There will be no institutional clash.” The Chairman further praised the media for upholding the public’s right to information through integrity and fact-based reporting. “I never missed Question Hour in the National Assembly because it ensured accountability and provided accurate material for the media,” he recalled from his time as Prime Minister.

He reiterated the Senate’s role in supporting legislation that protects journalists’ rights and offered assurances to resolve challenges faced by parliamentary reporters. “I promoted deserving officers from within the institution to ensure continuity and uphold the integrity of the Secretariat,” he added, rejecting favouritism and emphasizing merit-based governance.

In his remarks, PRA President Usman Khan proposed creating an endowment fund for journalists, suggested integrating PRA’s website with the Senate’s online platform, and called for capacity-building training via the Pakistan Institute for Parliamentary Services.

PRA Secretary Naveed Akbar emphasized the symbiotic relationship between journalism and democracy, expressing hope that PRA’s issues would be addressed on a priority basis. He thanked Chairman Gilani and the Senate Media Directorate for their continued cooperation.

The event was attended by the Deputy Chairman of the Senate, Syedal Khan, the Senate Secretary, Syed Hasnain Haider, and a significant number of PRA members. Chairman Gilani concluded by paying tribute to Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto for their roles in strengthening parliamentary democracy through the 1973 Constitution and the Charter of Democracy. He also highlighted the significance of parliamentary diplomacy and his role as the founding Chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference.

“Let us move forward together on this democratic journey, striving to build an informed, empowered, and united nation,” he said, reaffirming the media’s indispensable role in national development.
