IT can help prevent Aids

KARACHI- President of the International Aids Association, New York, US, Dr AIi Imran, has said tele-medicine and information health technology can be used to educate on and prevent HIV/Aids, hepatitis and venereal diseases locally and globally.

He was speaking at a seminar jointly organized by the International Aids Association, New York, and the Centre of Excellence for Women Studies, KU, on World Aids Day at Karachi University.

Dr Imran said the incidence of HIV/Aids is low in Muslim countries. Pakistan has 1,600 cases of HIV positive. He said Aids can be prevented if drugs and immoral sex are avoided and properly screened blood is used in transfusion.

“Americans and Europeans are now using religion to prevent HlV/Aids and venereal diseases. Health education should be introduced in schools and colleges to prevent dangerous diseases,” he said.

Dean Department of Arts, KU, Dr Arifa Farid, said: “Promiscuity is a major reason for HIV spread.”

In 1984, he said, it actually first appeared in homosexuals. Other speaker were Sqd Ldr Shabbir Ahmed (retd), Barrister S. M. Ansar, Dr Syed Abdul Mujeeb, Dr Azmatullah Khan, Dr S. Fahim Ahmed, Prof Saify, Dean Faculty of Pharmacy, and Ms Shakeela Rehman, besides a number of school and college students.
