The Government of Pakistan announced plans to establish a Cybersecurity and Social Media Awareness Council to coordinate government institutions and stakeholders in addressing cybercrime and promoting digital safety.

The announcement was made during Cybersecurity Awareness Week 2026, organised by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) from October 17 to 23 under the theme “Building a Safe, Secure, and Resilient Cyberspace”.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar stressed the need for regulatory frameworks to keep pace with technological developments and social media, while highlighting the importance of digital education in schools and youth participation.

Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunications Shaza Fatima Khawaja emphasised the need for a secure digital ecosystem amid growing cyber threats. She also announced plans to establish a social media regulatory authority and warned against AI-driven scams and identity theft, urging citizens to protect their personal information online. She further highlighted the importance of parental involvement in safeguarding children against cyberbullying and online grooming.

Dr Samuel Rizk, UNDP Pakistan’s Resident Representative, called for people-centred cybersecurity efforts, stating that a safer digital environment requires informed and empowered users. He noted the partnership with PTA aims to promote safe and responsible use of digital spaces.

PTA Chairman Major General Hafeez Ur Rehman (R) outlined the authority’s regulatory measures and public awareness initiatives to combat cyber threats, digital fraud, and misinformation.

The event included panel discussions on cyber risks and resilience, as well as presentations by telecom operators on their cybersecurity initiatives
