UN Women Pakistan and Geo News formed a partnership through the UN Women Global Media Compact to promote gender equality and inclusive representation in journalism.
The collaboration aims to challenge gender stereotypes, amplify women’s voices, encourage fair media representation and promote informed discussions on women’s rights. It will also create opportunities for editorial dialogue and highlight women experts and leaders.
Fahmida Iqbal Khan, Deputy Country Representative of UN Women in Pakistan, said the media plays an important role in shaping perceptions of women and girls. She said the partnership would promote gender-responsive journalism, challenge harmful stereotypes and ensure women are represented beyond victim narratives, with dignity and respect.
Geo News Managing Director Azhar Abbas said the channel aimed to strengthen gender-responsive editorial practices, feature more women experts and decision-makers, and ensure fair representation. He added that the partnership would build on Geo News’ efforts to amplify underrepresented voices and highlight women’s contributions.
The collaboration also emphasises ethical reporting on gender-based violence and other sensitive issues, particularly respecting survivors’ dignity and privacy.
