The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) and the Karachi Press Club (KPC) have expressed concern over threats issued to journalists by supporters of a religious party, urging the authorities to ensure the safety of media personnel.

In a joint statement issued on April 21, PFUJ President Afzal Butt and Secretary General Arshad Ansari condemned the online trolling and threats targeting prominent broadcast journalists. “We urge the Sindh and federal governments to provide immediate safety and security to the anchors and media personnel, as it is their constitutional responsibility,” the statement read.

The PFUJ called on the authorities to take concrete action to protect journalists and guarantee a secure working environment. The union affirmed its solidarity with the affected broadcasters and reiterated its commitment to defending the rights of media professionals to report without fear of reprisal.

Meanwhile, the Karachi Press Club also condemned the intimidation of journalists, particularly those associated with DawnNews, reportedly targeted by a religious group.

KPC President Fazil Jamili, Secretary Suhail Afzal Khan, and members of the governing body opposed any attempt to intimidate journalists or restrict freedom of expression.

They urged provincial and federal authorities to take swift, concrete measures to ensure the safety of anchors and other media professionals. The KPC also appealed to political and religious parties to respect press freedom and free expression.
