Stepping up efforts to curb online extremist content, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and Meta hosted a high-level workshop titled “Counter-Terrorism in the Digital Age” at the PTA headquarters on July 7.
The session brought together policy specialists from Meta’s platforms — Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp — along with representatives from key government departments and law enforcement agencies (LEAs). Discussions focused on refining strategies to detect and remove terrorism-related content, improving coordination between digital platforms and regulators, and strengthening complaint escalation mechanisms.
“Engagement with global platforms like Meta is crucial in safeguarding the digital ecosystem from extremist exploitation,” said PTA Chairman Major General (R) Hafeez ur Rehman.
The workshop included a dedicated Q&A session where participants directly interacted with Meta’s policy experts on challenges and solutions related to countering violent content online.
Dr. Nawab Osman, Meta’s lead on Dangerous Organizations and Individuals (DOI) policy, commended PTA’s efforts. “Such joint efforts are essential in maintaining safe digital environments while respecting community standards and fundamental rights,” he said.
The event is part of PTA’s ongoing initiative to promote responsible digital behavior and strengthen national cyber resilience.
