Punjab committee calls for media literacy to counter disinformation

Punjab Information and Culture Minister Azma Bokhari chaired the fourth meeting of the Information Steering/Review Committee to review progress on the revised National Action Plan in Punjab, focusing on countering disinformation, hate speech and misleading narratives.

The committee discussed the need for stronger coordination among government departments and a proactive approach to addressing misinformation and anti-state propaganda. Bokhari stressed the importance of a proactive, timely and fact-based strategy.

The meeting also focused on the impact of digital and social media on young people and students.

Bokhari directed educational institutions to incorporate media literacy into their curricula and use counselling and other educational forums to teach students responsible social media use, identifying false information and fact-checking.

The committee resolved to strengthen coordination amongst relevant institutions to counter disinformation, hate speech and anti-state propaganda.
