Senior journalist Shahzada Irfan Ahmed, associated with The News, died on September 20 at the age of 56 after a prolonged illness. He is survived by his widow and three sons.

Irfan’s journalism career spanned several decades, during which he worked with The News International, The News on Sunday and Daily Times. He also contributed to the South Asia Free Media Association (SAFMA) and international journals, covering issues including the economy, health, human rights, law, security, climate change and migration.

In 2009, he became the first Pakistani to receive the Daniel Pearl Fellowship, which took him to the Houston Chronicle in Texas. He later participated in selecting Daniel Pearl and Alfred Friendly scholars from Pakistan.

He was also a dedicated trainer for media professionals and a volunteer in social and development initiatives. Known for his accessibility, curiosity and ethical integrity, he made significant contributions to journalism and mentored many younger colleagues, who admired his wit and wisdom.
