On June 19,the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) held a ceremony to mark the number of telecom subscribers in the country crossing 200 million. The figure includes 150 million broadband users and over 2 million fibre-to-home connections.

IT and Telecom Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja, speaking at the event, said the government is continuing work on the launch of 5G internet services.

The event was attended by officials from Jazz, Telenor, Ufone, Zong, SCO, and mobile device manufacturing companies.

To mark the milestone, all mobile users in Pakistan will receive 2GB of free data and 200 on-net minutes on June 20. The offer is valid for 24 hours and can be activated by dialling *2200#.

The PTA, along with PTCL, Transworld, Nayatel, Cybernet, and Wateen, also announced the installation of Wi-Fi hotspots at selected HEC-recognised universities, including women-only institutions. The service will be available for six months. Mobile phone manufacturers have provided 200 locally assembled smartphones. These will be distributed among female SIM owners through computerised balloting. Distribution will take place across Pakistan, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

PTA Chairman Major General (retd) Hafeez-ur-Rehman said mobile services are now available in 80.30 percent of the country’s geographical area. He said mobile subscriptions have reached 197.7 million, broadband users are 150 million, and fixed-line users stand at 3.75 million. The PTA reported a decrease in teledensity from 81.4 percent in June 2023 to 81.21 percent in June 2025. Broadband penetration increased from 53.6 percent to 60.8 percent during the same period.

According to the PTA, women now make up 38 percent of mobile internet users, up from 25 percent last year. More than 36 mobile device manufacturing companies are operating in Pakistan. Since 2019, 136 million handsets have been assembled or manufactured locally.

The PTA has advised users to ensure their SIM cards are registered under their own names. SIM details can be verified by visiting cnic.sims.pk or sending the CNIC number to 668 via SMS.
