On November 25, the Senate of Pakistan approved a motion to send the Journalists and Media Professionals Protection Bill 2025 to a joint sitting of Parliament after the National Assembly did not act on the legislation within the required timeframe.
During the session, Senator Saleem Mandviwalla moved the motion, informing the House that the Senate had already passed the bill and forwarded it to the National Assembly for approval. The lower house did not take up the legislation within the 90-day period set under parliamentary rules.
According to these rules, a bill may be referred to a joint session if the National Assembly does not consider it within the stipulated time. Following the presentation of the motion, the Senate voted in favor of sending the bill to the joint sitting for final approval.
The bill proposes a legal framework for the safety and rights of journalists and media professionals.
