On November 24, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar called for the establishment of a Digital Media Association to strengthen accountability and ensure responsible use of online platforms aimed at countering fake news.

Speaking at the launch of the digital platform Mazaj News in Islamabad, Tarar said digital media played a significant role during Marka-e-Haq and has become central to shaping public discourse. He stated that the proposed association would develop its own rules and regulations to address misinformation and ensure certified platforms operate within a transparent framework.

Tarar said digital platforms must function with responsibility and noted that the government would assist the association in registration and rule-making. He added that unregulated broadcasting should not continue, saying that not everyone should be able to record and disseminate news without oversight.

The minister said digital media has expanded rapidly and now contributes to advancing what he described as the “battle for truth,” similar to the role of newspapers and television. He underscored the need to counter hostile narratives and use online platforms to project a positive image of Pakistan.

Tarar recalled that Pakistan’s first digital communication department was created after he assumed office and said Azerbaijan had expressed interest in receiving training from Pakistan in the digital media field. He also noted that D-8 member states had supported joint efforts to combat fake news.

Responding to questions, Tarar said Pakistan’s IT exports had grown in the global market. He acknowledged the Pakistan Peoples Party as a key coalition partner and congratulated its candidate from Muzaffargarh on a recent by-election win.

He cautioned against social media campaigns that target national security and state institutions, and said dialogue is essential for addressing political issues. According to him, political boycotts are a mistake, and allegations of rigging without participating in the electoral process are unfounded.

Tarar said government advertisements continue to be issued to all television channels and reiterated support for both traditional and digital media sectors.
