Dr. Lubna Zaheer assumed her role as Chairperson of the PEMRA Council of Complaints (Punjab), following her appointment by the federal government. She visited the PEMRA Regional Office in Lahore with other newly appointed council members and was received by senior officials including the Director Generals and Regional Director.

During the visit, PEMRA officials conducted a detailed orientation session for the new council members, outlining the regulatory framework, complaint redressal mechanisms, and the council’s expanded mandate. “The Council today is more empowered, with an expanded jurisdiction, and I am fully aware of the increased responsibility this entails,” Dr. Zaheer stated during the session, sharing that she had also previously served as a member of the Council of Complaints.

“As someone who has served in the media industry as a practitioner and broadcast journalist and as an academician, I strongly believe in the freedom of expression. However, I also uphold the significance of media ethics,” Dr Zaheer said, adding: “Our goal will be to strike a balance where freedom of speech is respected, while also ensuring responsible journalism.”

Highlighting one of the key developments was including the financial concerns of media workers’ such as delayed or unpaid salaries within the council’s mandate. “This is a significant step forward. Media professionals can now directly approach the council with their wage-related concerns, and we are here to ensure that their voices are heard.”
