On September 10, the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication, chaired by Syed Amin-ul-Haque, expressed concern over the weak quality of mobile and internet services across Pakistan and decided to summon the chief executives of major telecom companies, including Jazz, Zong and Ufone, at its next meeting.
The committee criticised the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) over inadequate responses regarding the causes of poor service quality.
PTA officials said some improvement had been observed following the launch of 5G, while several penalties imposed on telecom companies remained stalled due to legal challenges.
The committee emphasised the need for uninterrupted electricity supply for telecom infrastructure and decided to summon National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) and Power Division officials regarding the sector’s recognition as an industry.
The committee was also briefed on efforts to bring Apple into the Pakistani market and discussed taxation on imported mobile phones, including the possibility of allowing payment of duties in installments. It deferred consideration of the Electronic Transactions (Amendment) Bill, 2026, until its next meeting.
