In a statement issued on January 10, the Network of Women Journalists for Digital Rights (NWJDR) condemned the “ongoing relentless harassment and gendered disinformation campaign” against senior female journalist Asma Shirazi. As per the statement, the campaign was being led by “prominent political party supporters, and political commentators and vloggers.”
“The harassment and vile comments against Asma Shirazi are baseless and hinge upon character assassination by online trolls and political commentators with huge followings,” the NWJDR stated.

Responding to the ongoing harassment campaigns, in a post on X, Shirazi emphasized the resilience of female journalists, stating, “Women are always a soft target & have long been subjected to harassment, but we refuse to be silenced. We stand unwaveringly for truth and will continue to speak out, no matter the cost”.

In an interview with Dawn.com, Shirazi further elaborated on the misuse of women’s images and vulgar content aimed at discrediting and intimidating them. She criticized specific political figures and their supporters who perpetrate these attacks through social media and other platforms for monetary gain and political influence. However, she did not name specific individuals. Shirazi also highlighted discontent among female journalists regarding the ongoing propaganda and persistent harassment on platforms like X and Facebook, reaffirming their resolve to continue addressing and challenging these issues.

The Anchors Association has also voiced its criticism against the smear campaign.
