EU urges Pakistan to show measurable progress on human and labour rights

On June 01, the European Union (EU) called on Pakistan to demonstrate measurable progress on human and labour rights and governance reforms over discussions regarding Pakistan’s transition to EU’s Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+) trade framework beyond 2027 at the eighth Pakistan-EU Strategic Dialogue.

In a joint communiqué issued after the dialogue, Pakistan and the EU reaffirmed the importance of promoting and protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms in line with international obligations. Both sides agreed to continue working together on a range of political, economic and security issues.

According to the EU, issues where institutional gaps exist include freedom of expression amongst others.

According to the communique, Pakistan and the EU agreed to continue working to fulfill the conditions of the new GSP+.
